President's Message

The last 18 months has seen LearnNB/ApprendreNB take pause in order to solidify our organizational structures, and to create a business plan that ensured our ability as an industry sub-sector to be leaders in advanced learning and technologies.

That business plan proposed the creation of a Center of Excellence for advanced learning and technologies, complementary activities to support businesses to take advantage of such an entity, and a proposal for the development of a semantic web application that allowed for intelligent business matching between companies, opportunities, resources, research applications, employers, and employees within the learning and technologies space.

Much has been accomplished and after considerable dialogue we are now in initial stages of creation of both a Center of Excellence, and MyNexia, an enabling technology solution to achieve the business matching referred to, above. Although the organizational structures are slightly different than originally envisioned in our business plan, the resulting solutions represent a stronger, more collaborative, and potentially, more powerful result.

U.S. Air Force (USAF) I.T. Conference & Expo, Aug 25-27, 2008

The Canadian Consulate General/Atlanta is pleased to encourage Canadian ICT companies to participate in the annual U.S. Air Force (USAF) IT Conference & Expo. Aug 25-27, 2008. This event has taken place for the past 22 years in Montgomery, Alabama, the home of Maxwell Air Force Base. Last year the booths sold out and there was a large stand-by list of exhibitors.

The USAF is the largest user of ICT in the world. It is the largest customer of Microsoft, Symantec, Sun Microsystems, Dell and numerous other IT vendors. Last year’s conference had an emphasis on security and wireless products, but includes all aspects of ICT.

Additional opportunities include technical presentations at well attended specific breakout sessions and matchmaking with major VARS serving the Air Force.
Atlanta-based Trade Commissioner will meet individually with Canadian exhibitors and provide individual counseling and introductions. We welcome any type of association or provincial trade mission.

2008 Symposium on Advanced Learning Technologies: Roundtable Session Report now available in French and English

As you are aware, LearnNB/ApprendreNB and CFB Gagetown Combat Training Center hosted the very successful 2008 Symposium on Advanced Learning and Technologies. Immediately preceding the conference, a roundtable session was held at the Delta Fredericton with the intention of having stakeholders in this industry sub-sector give voice to the creation of the path forward with respect to the creation of a Center of Excellence in Advanced Learning and Technologies. In particular, LearnNB/ApprendreNB wanted to seek your input as to how we make sense of the knowledge and information we already have, identify areas of the same which we need to access, and learn lessons from our respective past experiences.

Attached you will find the summary of the session, prepared by Dr. Bill Morrison, of UNB’s Health & Education Research Group, a partner in this initiative. The session notes are included in both English and French.

So, you may ask, what will be different about this initiative from others that we have seen in the past? I suggest that the difference lies within the solid, stated commitment and action by individuals, business representatives, government, CFB Gagetown, and other organizations, to ensure that meaningful  and timely actions are taken to bring this vision to reality. Meetings have been held since the early part of April, and as the initial way forward is solidified, those taking lead roles will reach out to the community to seek further input and participation.

In the meantime, as resources allow, and value is added, LearnNB/ApprendreNB will continue to play a leadership role in the sharing of information, and in the creation of opportunities for learning and for dialogue.

Personally Managing Your Knowledge

by Harold Jarche - Jarche Consulting

Learning is an individual activity that often happens with and is supported by others. We may learn on our own but usually not by ourselves. Unless we live on a desert island, we learn socially.

In looking at how we can make sense of the growing and changing knowledge in our respective professional fields (e.g. Pluto is no longer a planet), I see two parallel processes that support each other. One is internally focused, as in “How do I learn this?” and the other is external, as in “With whom can I learn this?”.

Internally, we go through a process of looking at bits of information and try to make sense of it by adding to our existing knowledge or testing out new patterns in our sense-making efforts. The process I have developed for myself is to:

* Sort
* Categorize
* Make Explicit, and
* Retrieve

I have called this my Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) system, a term that is not original to me, and is based on the work of many others.

Aerospace Offers Opportunities

Now is the time for Metro companies to seek new opportunities, expand, say those in the industry
By Aloma Jardine,  Moncton Times & Transcript Staff, May 30, 2008

Aerospace isn't an easy industry to break into.  The high level of precision and quality required means deals are sometimes a long time in the making as every duck in the row is double and triple-checked.

But there has possibly never been a better time for companies to get their foot in the door, or to expand and grow existing business.

International e-learning strategies: Key findings relevant to the Canadian context, May 2008

CCL (the Canadian Council on Learning), in collaboration with stakeholders and members of the Canadian e-learning community, has been playing a proactive role in helping to identify elements of a possible e-learning strategy.

This study examines approaches to the development and implementation of e-learning in selected countries and organizations, highlighting existing policies and initiatives, and providing useful insights for CCL's work on e-learning in Canada.

This report concludes that, while Canada has played a leadership role and gained international recognition for several initiatives and achievements in e-learning over the last decade (infrastructure deployment, learning methodology, tools and practices; work on accessibility; research on learning object and repositories, etc.), it is starting to trail behind in these very important sectors. An e-learning strategy is urgently needed, together with a coordinating body which would respect the provinces’ competencies in education while mobilizing federal government agencies and other stakeholders towards clear, scalable, sustainable plans to support the new skills development agenda for the knowledge society and economy.
