Innovatia Opens Research & Development Centre in Saint John Print E-mail
Join Innovatia COO Roxanne Fairweather, Premier Shawn Graham, Bell Aliant President and CEO Stephen Wetmore, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) Director of Enterprise Development André Charron, Mayor Norm McFarlane, and Minister Greg Byrne on Tuesday, January 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. to celebrate the grand opening of the Innovatia’s multi-million dollar R&D Centre.

The Innovatia R&D Centre will create new products to revolutionize the way business information is structured, organized and shared in the quickly evolving business world. The Centre features the latest documentation and eLearning tools, as well as equipment and technologies for technical authoring and information sharing. The Centre will also feature production facilities for podcasts and webinars, increasingly popular vehicles for information sharing.

Innovatia’s major research and development initiatives are being supported through ACOA’s Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF). The AIF helps Atlantic Canadians compete in the knowledge-based economy by funding projects aimed at developing new products, ideas, markets, and businesses.

Tours of the R&D centre will follow a reception held at the Innovatia Offices in Brunswick Square.

The New Year will see Innovatia launch its new research and development facility. The Innovatia R&D Centre will create new products to revolutionize the way business information is structured, organized and shared in the quickly evolving business world.

“In practical terms, in today’s information age, businesses need better ways to manage huge volumes of information available online and within our organizations,” said Blair Morgan, Director R&D, Innovatia. “Information overload and the inability to quickly access the right information affects the bottom line – in terms of both productivity and cost.”

“It’s getting increasingly difficult to find the information you need when you need it,” continued Morgan. “There are over one billion gigabytes available online-- that’s over 500 million miles of books stacked end to end.  People get frustrated trying to find targeted information to complete a simple task. They end up paging through a 200 page manual to find out how to turn the ringer off on their cell phone.”

The R&D Centre will employ knowledge management experts and academic researchers with insight into the information challenges facing today’s businesses. The lab will feature equipment for demonstrating new techniques in documentation and eLearning, as well as testing stations for new technologies used in technical authoring and information sharing. The lab will also feature production facilities for podcasts and webinars, increasingly popular vehicles for information sharing.

Innovatia, with funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency Atlantic Innovation Fund, has invested almost $3 million over the past two years on other research projects, including information categorization for more efficient and accurate information searches, creation of interactive standard operating procedures for technical support personnel, and developing methods to re-use information across multiple formats for multiple purposes.

“Innovatia is poised to become a national and global thought leader in the knowledge management industry, which has tremendous potential to attract and grow business development opportunities right here in New Brunswick,” said Minister Byrne, Business New Brunswick.  “It demonstrates a commitment to improving academic and business applications, which will help streamline the way NB companies do business. “

Innovatia’s Research and Development Centre will officially open its doors on January 22, 2008.
