Presidential Perspective

The Leadership Symposium, "Leadership for Results", featuring Marshall Goldsmith, was both inspiring and thought-provoking. Marshall prompted all of us to think about our leadership capabilities on both a personal and organizational level. As Leaders in Learning, I'd like to suggest that we must all be working concurrently on increasing leadership effectiveness at both the micro- and macro-level.

Effective leadership must convey the sense of urgency that New Brunswick's individuals, organizations and business entities must exhibit if we are to meet the challenges before us. Effective leadership will create and communicate a compelling vision that ordinary men and women will follow. Effective leadership will act with courage to respond to both the opportunities and challenges within the timelines necessary to ensure that New Brunswick is not left behind.

The monumental shifts in attitude and understanding about the way we conduct ourselves and our business is all about learning - learning about ourselves, the world, and about new ways of doing business. However, the necessary results will only be accomplished through continued dialogue and decisive action.

I encourage you to attend ThinkNB (see note in this newsletter), New Brunswick's first ICT Showcase in many years. It is an important opportunity to celebrate the depth, expertise, and global reach of stakeholders within this important industry. LearnNB will have a booth - be sure to stop by, and renew your membership in New Brunswick's alliance for learning and knowledge management.

Kathy Watt

Think New Brunswick...

Made in New Brunswick

ICT Showcase

November 21st, 9 am to 5 pm

Aitken Centre, Fredericton, NB

New Brunswick is home to a core of 250 dynamic companies creating and exploring information and communication technology (ICT) applications.  Recognizing that industry has not always marketed their technologies effectively in New Brunswick, over one hundred ICT companies have joined forces with Business New Brunswick to showcase the world class capability available in our own backyard.

As Leaders in Learning, our success is directly related to the capacity of the research, the business lines and markets associated with the companies who will be at this showcase.  Many of our learning companies and organizations will be present.  Don't miss this one-day event.  Register online to day for free at www.thinknbpensernb.ca using this VIP Code TNB116.

NB Pitches National Centre for Advanced Military Training

Government officials were in Ottawa last week pitching an ambitious plan to create a research and development cluster surrounding advanced learning and performance support.  LearnNB has had a lead role in working with the New Brunswick Government and with senior officials within the Canadian Military to see this become a  reality.

Mobile Learning
Innovation and Engagement

The workshop, presented by Red Hot Learning and the eLearning Guild was held at the Wu Conference Centre, October 2-3 2007. It exposed New Brunswick's government, business, education and health sectors to best practices within mobile learning.

The outstanding presentations included Steve Wexler's eLearning Guild report on mobile learning and Dr. John Traxler's (University of Wolverhampton) full day orientation to the impacts of mobile technology on education and learning. The second day provided a series of four mobile project case studies, from public health, training and distance education.

This event was one of Atlantic Canada's first mobile learning events, and garnered partnerships from the prestigious eLearning Guild and LearnNB, along with sponsorship support from Enterprise Fredericton, The City of Fredericton, and the Telegraph Journal.

Leadership for Results

"Inspiring"

On September 26th, 300 government and private sector representatives gathered to hear Premier Shawn Graham and leadership expert Marshall Goldsmith.

Premier Graham talked about the challenges and opportunities for leadership posed by the impending departure of one quarter of the Province's civil servants over the next five years.

Comments overheard during the networking break following Dr. Goldsmith's presentation often included the word "inspiring.  Among other things, he challenged participants to consider more effective strategies for receiving feedback. As a result, $630 in "fines" for negative reactions to feedback has been donated to the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick.

A striking feature of the day was the fact that this important topic was being considered by an audience of both government and private sector stakeholders, as well as representatives of post-secondary institutions. New Brunswick's future depends upon all stakeholders working together, so the symbolism of the collaboration for this event was important.

Dr. Goldsmith's book "What Got You Here Won't Get You There" and over two hundred free articles, interviews, columns and videos are available at
