Announcing the "Getting Online" Project |
|
|
Getting Online: Distance Education Promising Practices for Canadian Literacy Practitioners (or the GO Project for short) is an innovative and exciting new project.
GO is a truly national project, bringing together a team of experienced, skilled literacy educators from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Newfoundland who are passionate about online education. Building on existing Canadian programs and expertise, this team will research the development and application of distance and online education for literacy practitioners in Canada. The GO Project will identify emerging trends and promising practices through various research methods, including an online survey now available on our website at: www.nald.ca/gettingonline .
The GO Project team will share these findings with Canadian literacy practitioners through interactive, online training courses and a website including independent learning modules. The GO team will also write and distribute a research report and a Promising Practices Manual for literacy practitioners.
Our goal is to bring about a heightened awareness in the literacy community about the use and value of distance and online education for training and professional development purposes. Via our online learning opportunities, newsletters and conference presentations, the GO project will make its resources and information available to the Canadian literacy community.
The GO Project is hosted by Athabasca University, Canada’s Open University. It brings together various project partners including Writing Out Loud (Alberta), Capilano College (British Columbia) and Community Literacy of Ontario. GO is funded by the National Office of Literacy and Learning (Adult Learning, Literacy and Essential Skills Program) and will run from June 1, 2007 – May 31, 2009. GO OBJECTIVES 1. Research and identify effective practices for distance and online education in the Canadian literacy community 2. Develop a national asynchronous online course on effective practices in distance and online education and deliver this course four times to literacy practitioners across Canada 3. Develop four web-based independent learning modules on effective practices for online learning for literacy practitioners 4. Write a research report on “Promising Practices in Distance and Online Education in the Canadian Literacy Community” and a “Promising Practices for Distance and Online Education Manual” 5. Promote the tools, resources and training opportunities available through this project widely in the Canadian literacy community
